Gregg Maddock
Pro Staff
Gregg Maddock is the Owner of the Wallace Fly Shop, Drift Boats and Guide Service in historic Wallace, Idaho. He also guides on the Clark Fork River in Montana and the North Fork of the Coeur d Alene River in Idaho. Prior to moving to the Idaho Pan Handle, Gregg made his home in Salt Lake City for 25 years. Wanting to see more of Utah’s Green River than he could by wading, he decided to build a wood drift boat. “I couldn’t afford a new glass boat so I bought a kit and built my own”. That opened up a whole new world that included the South Fork of the Snake, the Henrys Fork, the Snake River, the Rio Verde below Fontanelle, WY and the Madison River. His two daughters Kelly and Erica, helped with the build it so there were many long weekends floating, fishing and camping with them. In the winter, while most guides tie flies, Gregg builds or repairs wood drift boats. Last year he built a 17’ modified Don Hill that he uses for guiding the Clark Fork. One of the best things about the Clark Fork River near St. Regis, besides the rainbows, browns and cutts is that you can spend all day and only see 4-5 other boats all day. His favorite rod is the CF Burkheimer 489-4 DAL. Since he runs the guide service and the shop his personal fishing is done before the shop opens in the early morning hours on the NF of the Coeur d Alene. In June and July, right when the first rays of light hit the water, the native West Slope Cutthroat start rising. The 489-4 DAL has just the right amount of touch and power to lay a #16 PMD in the narrow feeding lanes and then...”
If Gregg is not in the shop or guiding you will usually find him with his wife Dana and their Australian Shepherd, Tuukka on a late afternoon float down the Clark. If you are passing through the Idaho Panhandle along I-90 stop by the shop and say howdy in Historic Wallace, Idaho. Or email him at wallacedriftboats@gmail.com.
